Learning from the school of life

It’s my own personal learning experiences that taught me cinema and I could
hardly get an exposure of institutionalised or organised system of knowledge in
my domain. During my college days, I wanted to join FTII to learn cinema as most
of my idols of those days were all from this institute. But like any of the parents of
those times, my parents also did not let me go for a professional training in film
making. Luckly i got an opportunity to associate with Navodaya Studio and my
learning of cinema in the technical front started here. I specifically mentioned
technical side because my aesthetic learning started much before. I used to attend
film screenings at faraway places while I was young and I should mention here that
travel, explorations and search carried out in one’s life is crucial for learning the
aesthetics of cinema. The technical side can off course be learned from any
institute.
For a long time I thought that there was no requirement to go to a Film School to
learn cinema since I had no such background and had become successful. But that
notion has changed completely as I know film making in the modern age requires
technical proficiency of a higher order. The digital days have dawned.
Another area is the technical possibilities open for a movie maker. And one has to
learn what are the technical parameters on which creative decisions are taken.
What are the technical possibilities which can be used for the desired image? From
the layering and compositing of a visual frame to splitting and channelizing of an
audio clip. Even the thought process demands training during these transition
years from Mono to Stereo to Multi tracks or Multi layers, for thinking a frame in
layers and a sound in 6 or more tracks. Therefore today, I am pretty convinced that
a film maker should learn cinema in an organized manner, if possible from a film
school. And this was the reason behind the formation of NEO FILM SCHOOL. One
can see the clarity of vision manifesting itself in every little detail of NEO, its
syllabus to its infrastructure.
I should congratulate Jain Joseph for this highly professional & systematic design
he has created for film education. I am confident that Neo Film school will be
known for its contributions in Indian Cinema in the years to come. You are
welcome to be part of it.
